Stepping into Trobadores Tavern is like immersing yourself in a vibrant medieval realm, where the essence of the Middle Ages springs to life.
The wooden decor exudes a nostalgic charm, an allure that quickly fades as your eyes lock onto the sight of the renowned Portuguese sausage sizzling over an open flame before you. As you settle into a solid wooden table, images of Knights gathering after their battles stir your imagination, warming your appetite for more food.

Handcrafted terracotta clay tableware adds a touch of rustic authenticity to the serving experience, lending a raw and textured feel. But it's not just about the dishes – Trobadores offers more than a meal, it's an immersive experience that every food enthusiast craves. While savoring dishes befitting knights and kings, the soothing plucks of strings fill the air, whisking you away from the bustling heart of Lisbon to a realm of simplicity.

Where is Trobadores Taberna Medieval located?

Trobadores Taberna Medieval sits on Calçada de São Francisco street, a long, curved hill in the Baixa, the historical district and heart of the city. Depending on which direction you are coming from, it’s a bit of a hike up or down a steep hill and slightly quieter compared to surrounding streets. Across the street, you will find the famous restaurant, Dear Breakfast, and can spot Tram 28 going by.

Trobadores Lisbon Menu

For first-timers to Trobadores, I am sharing my favorite dishes and recommendations, especially for those interested in tasting a few Portuguese must-try dishes.

BONUS: The eatery also doubles as one of Lisbon's best pubs, boasting a charming nighttime ambiance complete with live music and joyful revelry!

TIP: Arrive slightly before the lunch and dinner time rush to avoid waiting for a table. If you arrive with a stroller, be prepared to carry it down a set of stairs as there are no ramps. Welcome to Europe.

Starter Salad with pommagrante seeds

The starter menu presents items that seem freshly plucked from the garden, as though harvested just hours before. The tangy burst of pomegranate serves as a delightful prelude to the succulent meat that follows.

Polvo - Octopus

Trobadores' Octopus, Polvo, offered some of the most tender bites I've savored in Lisbon. This leggy delicacy is roasted and presented atop a bed of potatoes, making it a delightful companion to a cold beer, suitable for an individual or for sharing at the table.

Portuguese Sausage

Prior to my Trobadores dining experience, Portuguese sausage hadn't quite won me over, likely due to subpar encounters. However, the Portuguese sausage at this medieval haven is a revelation for newcomers. It sets a new benchmark for this delectable meat, and you might even find yourself contemplating replicating the fire-cooked magic at home.

TIP: One sausage is not enough, order three ;)

Borrego - Lamb

Trobadores offers another essential delight: the lamb chops, or "lamp pops" as I affectionately call them. These bite-sized morsels burst with aromatic and succulent flavors. Interestingly, they weren't overly gamey; instead, they showcased the ideal essence of a well-prepared rack of lamb – tender, grilled to perfection, and effortlessly enjoyable. A carnivore's afternoon delight.

Pato - Duck

Accompanied by asparagus, rice, and savory mushrooms, the Pato (duck) found favor with my better half. While I was savoring the Octopus, my husband took on the task of almost single-handedly devouring this dish.

The meat effortlessly separated from the bone, resembling the tenderness of slow-cooked chicken, just more succulent and juicy. Yet, don't anticipate an overwhelming amount of fat; the Trobadores duck confit managed to strike a delightful balance, offering ample meat without venturing into excessively fatty territory.

The Drinks

While you're reveling in the Medieval experience, why not embrace the spirit and sip on some Mead? It's like stepping back in time with a refreshing, sweet nectar. And fear not, Trobadores' drink menu won't leave you parched. You've got options fit for deities – think Ginginha, port wine, and Moscatel – or if you're more of a "commoner," there's juice, soft drinks, and even Heineken beer. This place isn't just a taste of history; it's also one of Lisbon's best pubs.

If you're on the hunt for an offbeat gem in Lisbon, Trobadores Taberna Medieval is the answer. This place guarantees an unconventional experience, with a hint of nostalgia and a dose of timeless charm. Nestled off the beaten path, it transports you through Portuguese cuisine in a way that's both old-world and inviting. Whether you arrive with your family, your significant other for a romantic night out, or a gang of friends ready to enjoy some drinks, this spot in Lisbon's Baixa will indeed elevate your foodie adventure.

Cost

This restaurant bar in Lisbon with a medieval twist will enchant you but not break your bank account. Visitors can expect to spend anywhere from 30 - 50 a person for a meal, depending on how much you want to eat.

TIP: To enhance your experience, consider a family-style meal for a delightful and inclusive taste of various dishes. Additionally, while the restaurant features a selection of vegetarian options, I'd particularly recommend it to meat enthusiasts and well-seasoned drinkers.
